Geopolitical analysis of territorial tensions in Greenland and Venezuela in the contemporary context

Abstract

Context: This text aims to analyse, through critical geopolitics, the territorial tensions involving the United States and territories linked to Denmark particularly Greenland in the Arctic and Venezuela in South America, seeking to understand how, and with what geopolitical implications, these spaces are discursively and strategically constructed as areas of interest in light of their articulations with Russia and China. Methodology: The text is characterised as a literature review focused on classical and contemporary authors in political geography and geopolitics, as well as on the collection of information and data published in newspapers whose discourses express an imagined geopolitics. Results: Based on the bibliographic survey, information, and data, manifestations of a geopolitics aimed at the recomposition of U.S. hegemony are identified, involving interests that articulate elements of classical geopolitics and, from the perspective of offensive realism, constructions of an imagined geopolitics. The article is thus a theoretical-interpretative study grounded in empirical cases.
