Abstract

Background: Gold mining is an ancient practice, which consists in the extraction and processing of mineral wealth present in the soils. In addition, it is the main socio-economic development activity in many regions of the planet. However, mining is a threat to global natural resources and responsible for several environmental problems at different levels. This study aims to understand trends, temporal dynamics and patterns of publications related to gold mining and sustainability. Methods: For this, a scientometric survey was carried out for scientific publications of the Scopus (from Elsevier) and Web of Science (from Clarivate Analytics) databases from 2016 to 2020. The survey identified 31 articles equally in the two databases, with seven of them having at least 15 citations. The co-occurrence of keywords among the authors was also observed. In this analysis, 133 different keywords were found, from which 14 had more than two occurrences and were classified into four groups with different themes.  Results: The scientometric mapping proved to be a significant mechanism for research, showing that the links between the authors have a strong
